Halloween Safety

Children love dressing up in their spooky costumes, trick-or-treating and, of course, eating lots of delicious candy. Make sure your little ghouls stay safe this year with these Halloween safety tips for children:

Choose safe costumes

Always go for costumes made of flame-retardant material, and avoid wigs or beards that cover noses, eyes or mouths. Masks make seeing and breathing difficult, so consider face paint or makeup instead. Avoid accessories, like swords or canes, that are sharp or excessively long.

Make sure children are visible at night

Light- or bright-colored costumes are easier to see in the dark. Regardless, put light-reflecting or glow-in-the-dark tape on your children’s costumes and trick-or-treat bags.

Trick-or-treat wisely

Children under 12 should always trick-or-treat with an adult. For older children who need less supervision, make sure they go out in groups and stick to well-lit areas they know well.

Make sure children understand how to walk safely

Tell them to always look both ways before crossing the street, stick to designated crosswalks, make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street and avoid using electronic devices while walking. No matter what, they should only walk on sidewalks, and never in the middle of the road, even if it’s Halloween.

Check candy for hazards

Make sure your child’s candy haul does not include choking hazards like hard candies or gum.
