Benefits of Mindfulness for Children Mindfulness: you may have heard the term recently, but what does it mean?

Mindfulness means that the mind is fully focused on what’s happening in the present moment—not the groceries that need to be picked up later, and not that annoying thing someone said to you last week. It sounds simple, but in today’s hectic world, it can be hard to do.

Mindfulness isn’t just for stressed-out adults. It’s also extremely beneficial for children, leading to better attention spans, enhanced ability to cope with stress and fewer discipline problems.

Here are a few tips for teaching mindfulness to children:

Go for a “noticing walk”

Go for a walk with your child, and encourage him to notice sights, sounds and smells during a few silent minutes. This helps your child become attuned to the present moment.

Grab a breathing buddy

Mindfulness instruction for adults often asks us to focus on our breath. For children, however, this can be confusing. Ask your child to lie down with his favorite stuffed animal resting on his belly. He can then focus on the rise and fall of the stuffed animal as he breathes in and out.

Be grateful

Gratitude is an important part of mindfulness. Before bed, you and your child can list all of the things you’re grateful for in your daily lives.
