The Boost That Comes With Spending Summer Outside

OutdoorsRemember the excitement of a summer day when you were young? If you were like most children back then, you most likely popped out of bed, threw some clothes on and ran outside to join the rest of the neighborhood children. You returned home—begrudgingly—once dinner was ready, or when the streetlights popped on.

It’s no secret that children don’t play outside the way they used to, but do their parents know what they’re really missing out on? It turns out that playing outside is more than just a fond memory from our youth. It’s one of the healthiest ways any child can spend their time, and the reasons for this are countless.

Let’s start with the most obvious benefit of playing outside—exercise. Not running around in a circle or doing a certain amount of exercise, but exercise that is actually fun for your child! As adults, we’re told that the best type of exercise regime is one that we enjoy and can stick with for the long haul. Wouldn’t it be great if we could all meet at the park and play a game of tag or capture the flag? Remember how exhilarating and exciting these games were when you were young?

Social benefits abound as well. Instead of turning into the typical teenager, glued to the screen of their smartphone, your child will actually have the chance to interact with other children in the neighborhood, providing real life experience that will help them work better with others down the road. Playing with others will give your child the opportunity to build self-confidence and a healthy amount of pride.

The perks of playing outside just go on and on. Running around in the great outdoors is a great way to relieve stress (for children and adults alike). The natural world is also a great place to build a vibrant imagination, and pique a lifelong curiosity, especially in key scientific fields. Some studies have even shown that children who play outside actually have better vision than those who don’t. It’s almost like your children are developing superpowers.

So this summer, when that feeling of no responsibility and no cares in the world washes over your child, don’t let them waste it staring at a screen in the same room for three months straight. Encourage them to get outside and enjoy all the benefits that come with it, all while experiencing a summer that they’ll never forget.
